Melanis pixe is found from South Texas (the Lower Rio Grande Valley) to Costa Rica, mostly in riparian subtropical and tropical forests. The wingspan is 38-40 millimetres. The upperside is black. The tip of forewing is yellow-orange; reds spots at the base of both wings and the outer margin of the hindwing. Adults drink nectar from of a variety of flowers; the larvae feed on Albizia, Inga, and Pithecellobium spp. (Fabaceae). In South Texas this species flies from January to November.
